What is “Coaching” ?

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership.”

Examples of potential pathways

Depending on the specific outcome you are hoping to achieve and by when, engagements may range from short-term (3 months) to long-term (12+ months). During your free 1:1 introductory session, we would assess what might be a good fit. Examples:

  • “I received developmental feedback that I need to improve my Leadership skills in order to be ready for a promotion. I want a partner who can help me close this gap, so I can be promoted in 6 months.

  • “I’m going through a big transition at work. I want a thought partner for a 6 month period who will help me get ready for the change and be there with me through the change.”

  • “I have a pattern of work-related stress and burnout. I want a partner who I can work with on an ongoing monthly basis in order to proactively manage it.”

  • “I’m looking for a new role. I want a partner for the next 3 months who can help me gain clarity on my values and what’s important to me in my next role, and also help me build confidence as I interview.”

  • “I am a new mother on maternity leave. I am returning to work in 3 months, and feeling so overwhelmed thinking about how I’m going to juggle my workload, evolving in my career, and being a mom. It feels impossible! I want a partner for 6 months to help me prepare to return and then support me with boundary setting after I return.

What to expect

The coaching relationship is most effective when the person being coached, the client, is ready and willing to be coached. They have a sense of what they would like to move or change. At the start of the engagement, we will partner to align on:

  • The outcome you are looking to achieve

  • How we’ll know we are on the right track

  • How we can best work together

As your coach, you can expect me to:

  • Commit to an open, honest, and collaborate relationship

  • Respect confidentiality

  • Support you in identifying goals and strategies to reach your aspirations

  • Help you gain clarity about what you value and/or your vision for a specific area

  • Encourage you to take action, initiate moving to what you want, including resolving challenges to moving forward

  • Listen carefully to what you say, asking questions, and providing feedback

  • Share resources and tools

  • Acknowledge and honor you and your unique process

As the person being coached, I expect you to:

  • Be committed to your own goals and vision

  • Come to each session prepared with what you want to discuss

  • Experiment with new approaches, behaviors, and perspectives

  • Take ownership of your progress and success

  • Keep focused on what matters to you

  • Provide me feedback on whether the coaching is valuable and focused on what you feel you need
